One of the saddest parts of this trip for me was visiting the last house of slaves remaining on Goree Island. There used to be about 26 slave houses on the island and this was the last one built in 1776.

Families were immediately split up, the cells were divided as follows: men, children, young (virgin) women and women. They were divided this way because if classified their “value”. They would have to sit tightly in these cells and only children and young women had bathrooms so they often sat in their own pee/feces.

Thinking about the amount of suffering men, women and children experienced in these very rooms was shaking and disheartening for me
