The Start to My Journey

It’s currently 4:42am on Thursday, June 9th in Gold Coast, Australia. I’m wide awake because in NYC it’s 2:42 pm on Tuesday and after being in 3 different time zones within 24 hours my body will need some time to get accustomed.

Before arriving I was more anxious than usual about this trip. Yes, I have traveled many times in the past but this would be the first time I’d be traveling completely alone in a different continent. The excitement to be going on the journey of my dreams was overwhelming but the anxiousness wasn’t too far off. However, I pulled myself together knowing I could handle and I’d make the most out of anything dealt on this trip.

I’m still in disbelief; I’ve wanted to go to Australia for soooo long and it’s a blessing to finally see it through. I knew the flight here would be brutal so there was no doubt if I was coming I wanted to come for an extended period of time. Luckily, I was able to find a volunteer program in which I could stay here for 4 weeks. So let’s talk about that flight, I was traveling for a total of about 28 hours and about 23-24 of them were on planes; my longest flight being 14 hours and 40 minutes from Houston, TX to Aukland, New Zealand. I
The bad news is even though I tried to sleep as little as possible the night before and in 24 hours only slept like 2 my sleeping problems kicked in and I didn’t sleep as much as I wanted to on the plane. The good news, well they had TVs and I watched just about every X-Men movie to help the time pass. Oh and how could I forget, I almost missed my last connection flight because the line for international transfers in Aukland were insane, luckily one of the flight attendants ran out to get me and the train didn’t depart without me. Once I arrived in the Gold Coast, the border patrol line was also a lengthy one. One quick observation I made is that many Asians, particularly Chinese seem to visit Australia, along with the Irish (at least when I was in the airport).

After taking the bus and train with all my luggage to a train station to meet people from the site I learned I could’ve been picked up right from the airport …but I’ll speak a bit more about misinformation so far later on in the day… I think I was so anxious I forgot to take any pictures on the bus or train, I’ll post pictures of those later on…stay tuned
